The USS Voyager is
Starfleet's newest starship. Much smaller than her contemporary, the USS Enterprise,
she carries a crew of about 300, was built for speed and maneuverability, and has the
latest Starfleet technology.
While pursuing a Maquis ship into
the Badlands, an area near Cardassian space that has many energy storms, both Voyager
and the Maquis ship were transported 70,000 light years away into the Delta Quadrant of
the Galaxy. During an encounter with the Kazon, an aggressive race in the Delta Quadrant,
the Maquis ship was destroyed and most of her crew was brought aboard Voyager.
However, because it would take Voyager almost 70 years, at maximum warp, to return
to the Alpha Quadrant, they are all basically stranded with no possibility of contacting
Starfleet or the loved ones left behind.
Captain Janeway set, as the
combined crew's mission, the objective of exploring the Delta Quadrant in the hope that
they will find some spatial anomaly or advanced technology that could help them return
home.
